daddy's-day

I could write
a million poems
about you
but nothing
could ever truly express
the deepest gratitude
I feel
that you
are my dad

You have given me
the things most precious
that I have only learned
to really appreciate recently

You were always there

I only knew to count on you
I couldn’t even conceive
that people had daddies
that were not unconditionally loving
endlessly supportive
always and forever there
because you were
I always knew
you would never ever
let me fall
even if you let me
make a mistake or two
You let me live and learn
while knowing
I always had
a safety net
with you

And for that alone
I would be forever
grateful to you

I have been able to take risks
I don’t know if I could have taken
if I didn’t know you
would always be there
just a phone call away
encouraging me always
to be the best that I can be

You made sure I knew
in often unspoken ways
that I was not alone
that you had my back
and loved me
even when
I made choices
that pained you

That is a kind of love
very few know how to live
and it is the gold standard
I now strive to hold myself to

You inspired me
to be the kind of person
who people close can count on
because I was always able
to count on you

So thank you
you set the bar
so very high here

Not to mention
professionally

I have never
met a person
more dedicated
to their work
than you

I have never
met someone
with as much
mastery
generosity
and humility
in what they do

The older I get
the more rare
I know you to be

So thank you again, daddy
for being not only the man
I could rely on
to braid my hair
before my dance routines
but the man
I could look up to
as I grew up
to be a woman
who needed
a man to look up to

I admire you greatly
I respect you deeply
I love you forever
and a day Martin Rosen

I am likely going to be
offline on Sunday
I am going camping
as we used to do

So I just wanted to make sure
to wish you
Happy Father’s Day today!

Because celebrating you
is one of my very favorite things to do

You inspire me
and those around you

As only a true hero
can do
