It has been perfectly terrifying to share myself publicly
The core fear being that it if I put myself out there,
I will be seen as a joke
Much of my life I have felt like a fraud,
so I have put a great deal of energy
into not being seen
But a few years ago I made a commitment
A promise to myself
that I would not make decisions
from a place of fear
and so I quietly started
this Emily Rosen Facebook page
hoping no one I actually knew in “real life” would find out
In any case, it grew
At first organically, and then
I started putting more energy into it
I started to see it as a form of artistry
How I paint my world and stories across platforms
How can I touch and connect with people
in a digital world
In the beginning,
I never ever shared anything about me specifically
I strictly shared information
and inspiration that was useful to me
but slowly, as people started reaching out
and sharing how what I was posting was impacting them
I got inspired to open up more
It was gradual for sure
People who know me from before
have often remarked that they are stunned
that someone who once was so private
now shares so much in a public forum
But there is this special kind of intimacy
to how we connect digitally
In the quiet of our homes,
behind our computer screens,
People who struggle to find their voice in person
can learn to speak their truth online
Yes, I see the drawback here,
But some of my dearest friends
have come to me through social media
and the people who so consistently comment
and reach out to me
live inside me beautifully
So I wanted to share with you my gratitude
and how profoundly honored I am
that over 110,000 precious individuals
have chosen to “like” my page
Really, I do not take that lightly
And it feels so sweet
that you have chosen to do that with me
I am pleased
I am grateful
I am tickled
I am touched
Sometimes, I am made fun of for my love of social media
And I can see the detriment I do
But then I think of you
Those of you I have grown so incredibly fond of
That I feel so profoundly connected to
And I know it is true
Yes, most of us have not met in person
Many of us probably never will
But this is real
This thing you and me have
It’s real
And I love you
