it takes a child
to remind you
to enjoy
what is

I don’t think
I have been in
my own backyard
more than a handful of times

But this week
I not only went
into my backyard
I enjoyed it
through the eyes
of another
who found such
wonder and delight
in every nook
and unexplored cranny

So much delight
I couldn’t help
but see
really see
as he
“Look Emily
look at this too,
it’s so cool!”

It was midday
and sunny
and here I was
unrecognizable to me
wandering almost aimlessly
following bunnies
waiting on prairie dogs
chasing trees
noticing how
the breeze
felt against my cheeks

Sometimes it takes
someone else’s excitement
for what you take for granted
to remind you
to enjoy
what you
forgot to

I got schooled
in gratitude
this weekend
not because
someone told me
how important it is
to be grateful
but because
I felt it
and through

And now
I not only have
a super sweet memory
but a new way
to experience
what I thought
I already knew

A good reminder
that when we change
the way we look at things
the things we look at change

May you too
the magic
that already
surrounds you

The world
is waiting
always full
of magic
for me
and you
