“Why do you speak
of so much suffering
it’s optional
you know”

And I remember feeling
her body fall into me
I was 90lbs, but strong
and I caught her in my arms
as she sobbed
no no no
not my baby

“You attract it,”
he said
“What you believe you create
What you think you attract”

I was overwhelmed by hate
as I locked eyes
with his smug knowing

And I thought
of a thousand ways
to tell him

When I saw her
behind him
a little girl
his own
and I could tell
she had been crying
or doing blow

Her eyes bloodshot
Her lips split
Her body painfully thin

“Why don’t you see
suffering I said?
It’s right in front of you
you know”

And I shifted my gaze
to let her know
I know

Because sometimes
what we need
is for someone
to actually see us
and acknowledge
what we are going through

We tend to turn our backs
on what makes us uncomfortable
We tend to want to
make things
that hurt
just go away

And I get it
I do
because it can be overwhelming
But, just because
you refuse to see pain
doesn’t mean it isn’t there

Our resistance to feeling
what is really happening
for so many of our brothers and sisters
is damaging

Because there is nothing worse
than feeling like the bottom dropped
out of your world
and having no one around you notice
you are breaking
on the inside

So I suppose
that is why I talk
so much of suffering
because just like happiness
it is all around us
it is in all of us
And perhaps the person
who you find
so distant, cold and rude
just lost her baby
or the love of her life

And you don’t know
You do not know
by looking at anyone
what is truly going on

So maybe…

Try compassion
instead of plastered positivity

Try curiosity
instead of telling people how to be

Try love
instead of dismissal

And then
and only then
will the suffering
the pain
be able to resolve itself

It will eventually disappear
not because you ignored it
because you loved it
so hard
it had no more room
to breathe

Yes, do that instead
Be the person
who lets other people know
I know
I see you
I walk with you
