I guess
you could say
I grew up
with a different
kind of love

My mom
is like a human
tuning fork
everything out of tune
gets amplified
around her
and demands
fine tuning
Her very presence
insists on integrity

Buying her
a Mother’s Day card
is a unique form
of challenging
because none of them
seem to sum up
the expression
of excellence
that is my mom

She is a unique one
for sure
One of the rare ones
who defies
standard rhyming pleasantries
For you see
she didn’t just mother me
she inspired me
by being
unwaveringly true

I have seen this woman
move mountains
standing up
for what she believes in
walking her talk

The older I get
the more I truly
appreciate and understand
how very privileged
I have been
to be raised
by this woman

She always
expected the best from me
never letting me say
“I can’t”
before I had tried
always asking me to stretch
and expand my capacity
beyond what I might dream
was possible for me

I don’t know a greater gift
a woman could give
another woman
than helping her see
her infinite capability
to do most anything
she sets her mind
and heart to

My mom
gave that to me
and not just fancifully
but practically
She gave me
the very best she had
going well above and beyond
what most parents
would do
just so me and my sister
had endless opportunities
she never had
that I get to benefit from daily

And that is only one
of the many things
I am so very grateful for

I am grateful for all the calls
she answered
at the wee hours of the morn
when I was in breakdown
And how she would
help me remember
who I am
and remind me that
I am not alone

I am grateful
that she passed her love
of history onto me
And how she taught me
to value wisdom
and what came before me

I am grateful
for how she holds family
of the primary importance
and how she showed me
what true loyalty is
keeping everything together
committed always
to what she says she will do

I am just so very grateful
I get to call this woman

Happy Mother’s Day Nancy!

I love you more than the sun
and the moon and the stars

I love you infinitely…
