kw-tips-quote-01

Can you?
I think about this often
I frequently talk about
“being true to who you are”
and I get hundreds of messages from people saying
“But I don’t know who I am”
And this isn’t just coming from people in their teens
But women in their 60s and 70s.
Each and every time
I find myself catching my breath
How do we not know who we are?
How is that possible?
Well, I could tell you many reasons why
I could talk about how our identity
is strategically being built while being stripped
I want to acknowledge this is happening
so there is no shame in feeling unclear
It isn’t so easy to hear yourself
with all the noise
It is loud out there
We must learn to get quiet
Not just outside of ourselves, but inside
Now I know how hard this is,
at least it is for me
There is so much happening
in my overactive psyche
But this is work worth doing
Lately especially,
I am finding myself
in a rather intense crisis of identity
So every night I ask myself this
And see what arises
Sometimes words comes easily,
sometimes images — often nothing
So I sit, sinking into the discomfort
of not being able to easily answer —
of not being able to swiftly remember
And what I have found is that under the words,
under the mind movies, there is this —
a place of supreme knowing
So clear, so poignant, so sweet
I forget
I forget that I could not know this version of me
So I ask you,
to ask yourself:
“Who were you before the world told you who you should be?”
