everything-that-irritates-us

Reluctantly
often awkwardly
I have found this to be true
time and time again

Sometimes I forget
and from that place
I wish to push away
that which is unpleasant
I feel inclined to run
from those I find irritating
I feel the impulse to make wrong
that which is not agreeable to me

But when I get curious instead
everything is better

Pushing breaks connection
Running can be exhausting
Making wrong tends to harden us
And so we get to be “right”
but at what expense?

From what I can tell
the cost can be rather severe
especially with those we hold most dear

Use irritation as an indication
that there is something
yet to be understood
and compassion yet to be offered

This is some of the most challenging work to do
but also profoundly rewarding
and guaranteed to deepen
your understanding
of self and others

So a reminder to you and me…
Get exquisitely curious,
please
